I was asked the other day why I have a homepage and my answer isn't quite as easy as a one sentence answer. There are numerous reasons why I started a homepage, some 9 years ago, and have maintained it ever since but I was curious as to why others have too. So I decided to look up the top ten reasons why people start homepages and these are the top ten reasons why others do so.
- To Express Your Thoughts and Opinions
- To Market or Promote Something
- To Help People
- To Establish Yourself as an Expert
- To Connect with People Like You
- To Make a Difference
- To Stay Active or Knowledgeable in a Field or Topic
- To Stay Connected with Friends and Family
- To Make Money
- To Have Fun and Be Creative
I definitely agree with many of the above reasons because I too surely share in them but I decided to create my own list. I must note however, that my list of reasons has really changed and evolved over the time, especially now that I am in professional sports and run my own business.
Amy's Top Ten Reasons
- First and foremost, my initial reason was to stay connected to friends and family back in Canada. I miss my friends in Canada every single day perhaps more so than other foreigners, those who have plans to return, because I have no plan on returning to Canada and I really don't know when I'll be able to see them next.
- To promote myself as a professional boxer and let sponsors feel my passion and see me as a person. A video I once posted of myself on my homepage lead me to Adidas sponsoring me and my homepage has also lead to me being featured in about 5 documentaries now, plus being asked to be in a two commercials. In addition to the doors it's opened and opportunities it's lead to, some of my sponsors follows my homepage, a couple of my boxing fans and former teammates keep up with it as well, and I suspect a potential future opponent's manager is reading this homepage as I type.
- To share my life in Korea because I think it's pretty kicka$$ -- I don't lead the typical foreign ESL teacher life, I'm fully integrated into the Korean way of life and I do really love Korea.
- To be able to reflect back on my own life, reminisce about things and see how I've grown as a person.
- My homepage helps me digest my day and really appreciate and understand it more because it does make me focus on each day at a time and write about it.
- At times, my homepage is simply for me to vent because sometimes you just need to get things off your back.
- To connect with people I wouldn't naturally come face-to-face with in person.
- One day I hope Snickers will be able to fully read English and be able to go back and read what I've wrote about him, about us... about our life.
- Sometimes I simply crave English and want to express myself but with only a couple of solid foriegn friends and a whack of Korean friends that don't really speak English, it's easy to feel like no one around me understands me fully. My homepage ables me to fully express myself and spill my beans in English without risking things lost in translation among friends or even having to translate it to start off with.
- Because I'm finally at a place where I can honestly say I love my life.
