As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Happily Overdosing... Sunday, June 1

Fantastic good food and fantastic good people, two positive and very major influences that have served me very well with getting fit and staying super happy.  If there were such a recipe for premium health, positive people and healthy food would surely be the key ingredients, along with exercise of course.  And though too much of a good thing is 9 out of 10 times never a good thing, you can overdose on healthy food and thus make it bad but you can never overdose on fantastic people.  If anything, a good overdose does you well.
Benefits of overdosing on positive people:
  • increase in psychological positive thinking and well-being
  • that down-in-the-gut feel good feeling
  • keeps you motivated
  • a morale boost
  • problems around seem more manageable
  • mental stimulation
  • increases your life span
  • lowers your chances of depression
  • proven to help give you a stronger immune system
  • greater resistance to the common cold and flu
  • better stress management and coping skills
  • makes you more resilient
  • reduces stress
  • recover faster from surgery
  • the ability to cope better with serious diseases
  • lowers your risk of cardiovascular disease-related death
  • higher rate of you reaching your potential
... And, if the above reasons weren't enough to convince you of the awesomeness of positive fantastic people, the fact that being one of these positive people means you look better too should convince you.  Laugh lines surely out beat stress lines on the forehead, not to mention dried out skin and other physical changes stress and negative thinking causes.  I'm not saying negative people are all ugly, but stress definitely ages you as do many of the bad habits that such people lean on to get them through situations and I've yet to hear anyone ever say "hey your frown makes you look so pretty".  A smile is the best accessory ever.

My life very much revolves around my boxing club and my boxing, and the more and more it does the more and more I realize that this is the optimum situation for me.  I mean, I'm running my own business with Snickers and our business is helping others get healthier.  Consequently, there's a direct correlation between them becoming healthier and them becoming happier, so our business is ultimately helping people become healthier and happier.  We train around 50 members a day, that's 50 chances to catch some positive vibes, some smiles, and feed off each others positive energy.  Positive energy is contagious, as is negative energy, but with a club full of members all training hard to kick their "baby Buddha bellies" goodbye and welcome in sick six packs, you'll be hard to find a member who won't smile back if you smile first.  Often times, like on days when I'm working on a pure lack of sleep and desperate need for coffee, it's a random smile from a member that cheers me up and reminds me that everything is going to be ok.  Things are going to be great and they are great.

I wasn't always this happy-go-lucky girl and I don't really think I am all positive vibes and pretty flower-thinking, but I know where I once was and I definitely see a contrast in that spot and with where I am now.  I think one of the biggest changes I made that really did it for me was changing the crowd of people I associated with, both on a personal level and on a business level.  One would assume I would have a hell of a lot more stress and pressure now that I am my own boss and am running a company in another country  and in another language but, to tell you the truth, it's quite the opposite.  It has less to do with the fact that I make my own hours and call the shots and more to do with those connected to my business, those whom I interact with on a daily/weekly bases, and in particular those who are NOT connected to my business like the delinquent coworkers who continually complain about the job and each other, the boss with their slave-labour mentality and power trips, the students who complain about marks they didn't get because they didn't deserve, the random tag-alongs who try to incorporate me somehow into their pathetic drama, and the self-proclaimed "friends" who really weren't friends at all but instead were "eaters of my energy" and around only when they want something or need someone.

I may not be full 100% "energy eater-free" but you sure as hell better believe the number is a whole lot smaller.  Negative people have an interesting way of straining themselves out of your life but I've done some extra steps to aid in the straining out of the negative by overdosing on the positive.  I really have no room for negative people in my life.  For the sake of my business especially, I can't mentally and physically afford them in my life.  Certain people I've labelled negative probably don't even know I've labelled them as such, so be it.  They really don't need to know.  The label isn't to insult or hurt them but instead it's to protect me and keep me sane.  Negative people and their drama drive me bonkers.
