As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

An Unsuccessful "Day Off" Training... Thursday, July 17

I must admit, I'm a sucker for a Hulkie who wants to challenge me to a workout and I've got a sweet tooth for some sweeties I train who are actually rather sarcastically sweet with me.  This meant I was so very unsuccessful with having the day off training.

The work day started off with a friendly challenge and that should have been my first hint that I'd be training extra hard today.  The challenge was for me to run 2km as fast as I could on the treadmill.  This challenge was then followed by another Hulkie posing a rowing machine distance challenge (who could row the farthest distance in 10mins).  I accepted the challenge but wasn't so accepting of the results.  Turns out the distance function on the particular machine I was using was somewhat off, resulting in a surprise butt-kick I got.  But that wasn't the only butt-kick I got, oh no.  Nine minutes of planks was an additional butt-kick as was three of my Hulkies asking me to test the day's crossfit class with them and one of them upping my weight for it.  I then did a skipping demonstration/help session for intermediate level jump rope (double jumps, criss crosses, double leg hops, etc).

I hosted the day's crossfit class a total of six times today with the first class me participating in it and then same with the last one.  The last class kicked off shortly after 10:30pm when a group of five guys who rant and rave as much as they get on my case about the intensity of the class asked for me to train with them.  Telling them repetitively that I've already finished my training earlier on in the day and have already demonstrated each xercise in the class enough times to serve as doing another full class served no purpose; they continue to insist I join them.  They didn't really want me to join them, I'm convinced they only wanted me to push me to my limits not only with how much exercise I could do today but how much weight I could do during the circuit class.  Good guys but man do they know how to push my buttons and make me work up a late night sweat.
Today's Training:
  • 2km sprint
  • 10min rowing machine competition
  • 9mins of planks
    • (1.5mins each of traditional plank, left side plank, right side plank) x3 sets
  • 12min skipping demonstration
  • 32mins of crossfit class participation (2 classes @ 16mins each)
= 75-80mins of training
It made for a rough "day off" training which meant making my way to closing time tonight was a bit harder than usual.  Snickers headed out of town to see a friend, leaving me to close the club alone.  A few members trained a bit later than usual so I closed up and finished work well after midnight.  And just as I was wiping down all the equipment and was about to call it a day, a member came knocking on the door.  They had forgotten their cellphone.  One found cellphone and one chat later, it was now almost 1:30am and I was finally closing the club doors for the day.
