Those who know me know I'm a huge advocate for eating clean -- food is fuel. And while it drives me bonkers that most of our foreign members struggle with their food choices while our Korean members struggle with simply eating enough (or eating in general), I really am trying hard to challenge their thinking so that I can change their thinking. So many members have such a negative relationship with food, it's incredible. Part of me trying to change their mentality is by setting an example. I really do try to practice what I preach, so to speak. I guess that'd make eating clean the good word... hahaha. But anyways, back to my point here. One of the biggest challenges I've been facing is changing Snickers' eating style.
Because of the fact we eat, sleep, train, and work at Hulk's, so much of our lives are totally out on display, exposed for all members to see. A part of what is exposed are our eating choices and eating habits. I can't count how many times I've open the fridge and have seen someone sneaking a peek to see what's in it or how many times I've shown members the food prep I do every week. Members see me prepping my weekly food every Wednesday, like clock work. Those that come in earlier to train on Wednesdays know not to ask me to train because I'm at the juice bar cooking up a storm and making a mess with all my veggies and loads of chicken and eggs.
But Snickers...
He's notorious for skipping meals and then loading up on one massive meal when WOW is finished training and the two of them go to a restaurant, leaving me to manage the club for a solid 30-40 minutes. "It's not fair", I told him the other day, "I want to eat at a restaurant too -- eat on-the-spot, fresh-made meals but I don't and it's not fair that you get to just because you're too lazy to plan ahead!" As far as I'm concerned, if I have to reheat my meals because I plan ahead but he gets to eat out at a restaurant because of his lack of planning, that's just rude so I called him out on it big time this week. Consequently, we've agreed that he's only allowed to leave the club 1-2 times a week for a meal, with one of the times being on Fridays after sparring because he does finish work at 9pm.
Snickers is a great cook, a really good cook that is, but he just totally lacks motivation to cook and he's all about leaving things to last minute. I knew getting upset with him about his lack of cooking wouldn't change anything, it'd just add a dose of drama, so we came up with a different solution. As of this week, Snickers' weekly meals get delivered to him. The other day we contacted a company that does such a service -- preparing and delivering meals -- and signed up for a month. Every week they will be delivering a cooler-like box with assorted side dishes and a soup/stew for each day. All Snickers will have to do is simply pick out what he wants to eat, nuke it (reheat/cook) and then make sure the rice cooker always has fresh rice ready to eat. Unlike me who eats a main dish only for every meal, Snickers is pure Korean in that he's got to have his bowl of rice and his million-zillion side dishes and soup. Well, he's got that now so now there's no excuse why to go hungry and escape to a restaurant.
