I should have, could have, and would have returned to my day of lazy lounging after training and after our post training meal if it weren't for the fact that our small table of four quickly grew in numbers once friends caught word that we were out on the town.
I'll be the first to admit I don't "play nice" with the girlfriends my guy friends bring out, more specifically the Korean girls my Korean guy friends bring out. They're always so overly girly and, for the most part, they come across as so superficial and very "princessy". My guy friends are always trying to introduce me to their girlfriends, they think I have a total lack of female friends and it's true. Well, not exactly. I have a whack of female friends but they just happen to live in Canada. I personally don't care if someone is male or female but here in Korea, a country where even age matters in terms of friendship, gender is somewhat important. So there I was tonight, in what was definitely a "friendship set-up" and, while sitting there with one of them at our table tonight, I couldn't help but roll my eyes and wish to God to zap me out of the situation. There she sat, taking pictures of herself and looking repetively at herself via anything that gave even a slightest reflection of her. "My female friends in Canada would punch her out if they ever saw this", I thought to myself.
"You and my girlfriend should be friends", one friend said to me. His girlfriend wasn't present at the table tonight but I had been introduced to her last weekend.
"Does she like to watch UFC?", I asked.
"No, she doesn't like fighting sports", he responded.
"So she doesn't box then and doesn't like boxing... right?!", I added.
"Yup" he said. And with that I shook my head and said, "Ya, we could never be friends".
OK, so in all fairness I do have female friends who don't do boxing but they like it at least to be interested in how my boxing and my boxing club are doing. I'm a sports girl, what can I say, so I don't blend well with others who don't like sports.
"But you must like more than just sports", my friend added.
"Yes. I like to read", I told him.
"See, there you go. What do you like to read?"
"I like to read about boxing and fitness, and I really enjoy sports psychology", I answered.
"Well, do you like shopping, make-up and going out for coffee like most girls?" he asked.
"It depends who you think 'most girls' are. I am not a Korean girl so yes, I'm not like most girls. I hate shopping unless it's for food and boxing gear and do I look like a girl who is particularly interested in make-up?! As for coffee, I love coffee but mainly because it helps me get through the grueling boxing training that comes after it", I told him.
"Your wife isn't normal!", he turned and told Snickers.
"Exactly, and that's why I married her!' [Props to Snickers for the perfect answer here!!!]
But back to the one girl at the table with us tonight. As I searched for some random thing to use as a kind of conversation starter, my friend Old Rock interrupted my thoughts and told her, "You look so much prettier than before". And there it was, that was the conversation starter. That was what we both could talk about -- our nose surgeries!!! I almost choked on my coffee at the connection but knew she wouldn't be so amused. The fact that she had cosmetic nose surgery wasn't a surgry, she had so oddly and proudly bragged about it and posted pre and post surgry pictures on her Kakao Story. I've broken my nose three times but it wasn't until the third break, a bad break, that the doctors suggested I have surgery on it or risk breathing problems. Her surgery however was just for vantiy, none the less, it was what connection us. I decided not to act upon my realization of such connection but instead shared it with Snickers in the car afterward.
"Anyone can look pretty with make-up but it can't make them be beautiful", Snickers noted to me. "Plus after a few rounds in the ring, make-up or no make-up, all you girls look scary anyways" he added. Thanks Snickers, you almost scored a sweet kiss before you added the second part... hahaha.
