We have over 100 members and a total of 66 Hulkies trained today. It marks the most we've ever had come to train in one day -- usually we're only in the 50's. Those who train at Hulk's know that we take a personal training approach to training our members, meaning that all our boxers get one-to-one padwork and all are guided through a follow-up weight training workout. Lately it's been solely Snickers doing the padwork and me doing the weight training. My way of getting everyone interested and involved in weight training has been to randomly host crossfit circuit classes. Either when a cluster of members are done their boxing or before they start their boxing, I announce I'll be hosting a class and then I go around the club asking if members want to join in that particular one. I used to randomly make up classes based on what they did and didn't train the day prior but now I make one tried and tested class for the day. I'm thinking about taking it a step further and making some kind of schedule, like the following:
Monday = upper body
Tuesday = lower body
Wednesday = abs
Thursdays = full body
Fridays are our Free Train Day as well as our Sparring Day so most members who come out for training on Fridays either participate in the sparring or just do their own thing. I thought about perhaps not offering a crossfit class but making up a class routine for those who want to do it by themselves on Fridays. However, for those who participate in the sparring on Fridays, they're usually too exhausted after from sparring or they're just there to spar and watch other's spar. I'm pondering some plans though for our weekend Free Train. On the weekends we're not actually open but we do randomly open the club doors, usually only for 2 hours, for members to come train at their own will. We have the usual crowd that trains on the weekend. There's usually only 5-6 of us that train together on the weekends so often we treat them to dinner out after ward. My idea here though, for weekend Free Train, is to offer a full body crossfit class but change it, make it unique just for weekend training. I know a lot of our Hulkies are new to training, both with boxing and weight training, so they wait on us to tell them what to do next and that's fine but perhaps maybe that's why many don't come out on the weekends -- they just need some guidance.
I can totally vouch for needing someone to workout alongside -- hello, that's why I now train at 2pm as supposed to 12 noon like before. There's definitely an extra push, more motivation and certainly more positive energy that comes with training with someone and, as in my case, some competition too. It's true. You should see how my workout partners and I train. I always have to either do one more round of boxing, lift heavier weights, hold a rep longer, and/or do one more rep than them. I vouch that me being their coach is the reason but it's more than just that and I think they know it too... hahaha. So maybe a weekend full body crossfit class will interest many as well as give my workout some extra needed focus and planning.
Today 51/66 Hulkies who trained participated in my crossfit class; it focused on legs.
- 1/51 participants puked a bit on themselves, a sure sign that I had to adjust the intensity.
- 9/51 participants clearly swore out loud while doing my class... here's to hoping it wasn't directed towards me.
- 1/51 participants quit my class after just the second set... her dramatic walk-away would have been somewhat dramatic if she could have properly walked. Wobbling away wasn't taken so seriously.
- Out of the remaining 15 Hulkies who DIDN'T do my class, 7 did some other kind of weight training with me and only 8 did their own thing.
My crossfit circuit class was a brutal one, I know, but I also know if members didn't like it then they wouldn't be asking me when they could do crossfit and/or returning everyday to do it. I really upped the intensity of it by making them do half of the exercises with a kettlebell. Most members are on to me by now, so they know when I say they're going to use only one kettlebell during the circuit that they are to pick very, very wisely. They're well beyond trying to impress each other, they never really were about competing with each other, but they know I like to tease them and push them a bit extra hard with training.
Today I took my teasing and pushing to a bit of an extreme when I called out four of my mini Hulkies for not training so hard. Both Snickers and I were waiting on them -- Snickers was waiting for them to start their sandbag work so that he could then do padwork with them and I was waiting for them to finish their padwork so that we could all do a crossfit class. When too many minutes for my liking passed and I was still waiting for them, I decided to take matters into my own hands. "For one round you're going to hit that sandbag and if you dare stop... I'm going to hit you!" I told them. And that's exactly what I did. I stood there for a full round with one of our large stretching sticks in hand and hit whomever stopped punching. They each got only 1 or 2 hits each and I didn't hit hard but it definitely worked to make them train hard. I had to laugh when one yelled out "abuse, abuse!", to which I replied, "it's not abuse if you like it"... and they do. They like the fact we pay attention to their training and train them hard. Sure they may not like today's back-of-the-legs and tush stick-slapping but I didn't hit them hard and it gave us all a good laugh.
