As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

For the Love of Hulkies and the Food... Wednesday, November 26

I think the food flows at Hulk's as much as the sweat does and perhaps we're just as serious and hardcore about our training as we are about food, or so it seems the case.  I love my food, don't get me wrong, but the excess of food that's been coming in and out of Hulk's is getting rather ridiculous. I think it all stems from the coal heater, seriously.  It is the root of this sudden influx of food coming in.  I mean this thing is amazing for cooking everything and anything you want.  Unlike last year's one, you can open up a flap on the front of it and viola, hello campfire style cooking for everything from sausages to dduk!  Throw some tin foil wrapped sweet potatoes on the top of it and viola, you've got a crowd forming, everyone wanting to call dibs on this sweet potato or that one.  I even have friends who'll text me and ask me to save them one, it's that much of a hot commodity here.  But this week there has been quite the dramatic increase in food items being brought to the club via our Hulkies and it really has had the snowball effect.

This week's "food gifts" from Hulkies
(food that has been brought for sharing)

  • dduk (pounded rice)
  • 6 muffins
  • a loaf of bread
  • a bag full of pastries
  • package of 6 massive duck sausages
  • package of 20 pork sausages
  • dried fish
  • dried squid
  • box of walnut cake pastries
  • 3 cases of vita 500 juice (that's 60
  • 2 boxes of chicken
  • a box of cookies (there's about 100)
  • wassabi snacks
  • persimmons

Members eat more at Hulk's now and consequently this has resulted in members bringing in more food to the club.  Korea has a very communal culture and this is most definitely evident in the fact that so many of our Korean Hulkies have been bringing food to share with the rest of the club members.  More food has meant Hulkies are socialising a lot more together so we're definitely happy with that.  Everyone hangs out by the coal heater, it's like the hot spot of the club, literally too.  And while some of the high school Hulkies are known to stay a few hours, others are starting to stay longer too and linger either before training or long after they've already trained that day.  Today one Hulkie came at 6pm and stayed to help out with our Christmas fireplace decoration.  We dropped her off at her house just a bit before 2am -- 8 hours later.  And she wasn't the only one to stay so long either.  The next in line to stay so long at Hulk's today was one of our long time Hulkies who stayed 6 hours and our main sponsor who came for 2 hours at the start of the work day and then stayed an additional 4 hours later on for both training and dinner with Snickers.

Tonight we hosted a chicken party, well, that's not entirely true.  It was more or less a bribe to get some Hulkies to help me finish the Christmas fireplace display.  I had worked on it as much as I could by myself but attaching the massive brick design sticker by myself meant risking sticking myself to it all.  We fed five Hulkies so five Hulkies stayed to help me.  I love how motivated by food some of them tend to be... hahaha.  I can TOTALLY relate -- hello early morning chilly runs!!! Chicken arrived a little after midnight and then, after we all ate, we got to work on finishing the fireplace display.
