And then there are random, once-in-a-blue-moon days like today, when my body no longer accepts my mind ignoring it's plea for a day off training and just doesn't work. My body went on strike today and so my mind had to no choice but to listen and to let it relax. I called off my morning run today with Rocket on account I don't want to buddy up a long run day with a run on the following day. So I had the morning off training but after an intense 2 hour of club cleaning, I laced up my shoes and went on the treadmill for a quick warm up run.
The plan was to do my usual 2km warm up run. I lasted only half a kilometre. I also only lasted through a few rounds of shadow boxing before I accepted the fact that my body was just too exhausted and needed a break.
My last day off training (running, boxing and weight training) was 15 days ago and ever since then I've either boxed and weight trained, gone running or did all three in the same day. Saturdays are my hardest training days though sometimes I switch it to Sundays. On Saturdays I have my long run in the morning and then boxing and weight training in the evening.
Ended up taking the day off ALL training, well with the exception of the short run and 5 rounds of shadow boxing. Mondays are already long days with us having to do an intense 2.5hr cleaning of the club in the morning so not getting up for a run and then taking the day off of boxing and weight training made the mad rush of members training and the greeting of all our new ones more bearable.
Today was an odd day, even for a Monday. I knew we had a lot of female Hulkies but today we saw first hand just how big of a percentage of our membership are female Hulkies. For a few hours here, the guy to girl ratio stayed around the 1:10 mark. I thought it pretty cool because at my former boxing club there was definitely not this many female members and those who came surely didn't do any weight training. At Hulk's almost 99.9% of our female members do weight training with me. The remaining 0.1% are those who perhaps are taking the day off of weight training because they kicked their own butt with it the day prior or don't have enough time to do both boxing and crossfit.
I got a text late in the evening tonight from a friend of mine and it was definitely a sweet way to end the evening. This particular friend isn't a member of Hulk's and is a new friend but she has quickly picked up on why Hulk's is more than just some boxing club. Here, I'll let you read it for yourself.
"I completely support you and the fact you are shaping and molding the minds and bodies of young children. Especially in Korea where submissiveness is expected of the women here and where suicide rates are high due to stress. This is what the community needs for their children to thrive. They need strong ambitious and driven role models like you and your husband. They need a place to come and punch their feelings out. They need positive outlets that don't lead them to the nose of an empty soju bottle. I completely and utterly support you and your family's business.
Plus you're Canadian... lol"
It was a super sweet text message and it came at a perfect moment. As many know, we're trying to raise money for a new boxing ring and it's been as discouraging as it is encouraging. Everyday it feels like a roller coaster of emotions because of it. For those who know what Hulk's is to us and for those who have experienced what being a part of Hulk's involves, asking for the support of friends, family and community members, honestly, it didn't feel inappropriate asking for help. It only felt inappropriate asking those who knew nothing about Hulk's because to them, sure, we are just a business but to those who know Hulk's, we're so much more than just that and it was great to get a little extra encouragement today... thank you.
