One of the perks of having a business where so many walks of life and different professions come is that we have quite the pool of people to pull from for help. Today we pulled from our pool of people and asked them to come in to discuss Phase 2 -- a business manager of a high end restaurant and whose family owns one of the largest wedding halls here in Cheonan, a building contract worker who leads a construction crew, a young entrepreneur who has just launched his own business, and a man who has just sold one of his three businesses and is starting up a forth. Snickers and I met today with four others to discuss Phase 2 and what they thought of it.
3 out of the 4 said it's either way too expensive or too big of a risk to take.
1 out of the 4 said we better want it as much as we wanted the original Hulk's.
1 out of the 4 said we could do it because we already have done it once, this is just on a larger scale.
Basically 2 said don't do it, 1 was on the fence about it, and 1 said go for it.
Ironically enough, the one person who said go for it is our club's main sponsor, Wow, and he has always believed in us even back when so many others said Hulk's would be impossible for us to make. As for the guy who is on the fence, he is a business associate/friend of our main sponsor and is also one of our Hulkies. He started a company from nothing and is now quite the very successful entrepreneur here in Korea, designing and building many buildings many of us are very familiar with. If people think Wow with his three successful companies is well off, wow, they ain't see nothing yet. His paycheck makes Wow's look like chump change. And as for the three who said don't do it, they are two long time Hulkies of ours, two of which are very close friends of ours. I think perhaps the financial struggle one is having with selling his restaurant is why he said for us not to do it. He invested everything he had into his restaurant and now is back working in his family's business, the wedding hall. The other friend of ours who said don't do it, well he just quit his job. I was surprised that he'd said don't do it because he was racking in a sweeter than sweet paycheck at work but gave that up. He loved what he was doing at his job but believed he could run a better business so he most randomly quit his job and this weekend I'm going to the grand opening party of his new business.
It seems like for every two people we let in on our Phase 2 of Hulk's, one of them shakes their head with disapproval and disbelief that we can pull it off and the other gives us a thumbs up and huge smile. Today 3 said no, 1 said yes and 1 had no answer.
A big risk means big rewards, right?! Well that's what they say but who the heck are "they" anyways?! Exactly, I don't know either. Snickers is all about making the jump and starting Phase 2 as quickly as possible and it seems like everyday there's some random contractor or city worker walking into Hulk's to discuss some part of it. I am responsible for designing it like I did the floor plan for Hulk's, no pressure. I had a lot of fun designing Hulk's floor plan but must admit I feel rather over my head with Phase 2 of Hulk's.
The other day one of our newer Hulkies approached me and asked me if Hulk's Boxing was moving. He had overheard a conversation between two guys at a local restaurant and he wanted to know if it was true. I reassured him that no, we're not moving. Phase 2 is very much a 5-10 year plan but yes, we are trying to make it happen sooner than later. When Phase 2 is launched, trust me, it'll be a very publicised thing, members will be well informed, and members most definitely won't be inconvenienced in any way whatsoever.
An insane amount of hard labor, extra long hours, sleepless nights, and a continual overdose of coffee during the renovations of Hulk's two years ago proved so many people wrong. Even I was shocked at how we took this idea in our heads and pushed it into physical form within just a matter of 3 months. But I don't know if we're pushing our luck with Phase 2. I don't even believe in luck.
Hulk's costed us an estimated $110,000 to make and Phase 2, taking Hulk's to the next step, is going to take an additional $150,000. My biggest fear with Phase 2 is that perhaps Hulk's has given us too much confidence with thinking just because we did this once that we can do it again. There were a lot of people who helped us and I believe it's not fair or right to ask for such help again. I think perhaps the people who will extend themselves and help us without us really asking are many of our members. I know many of our members do feel a sense of ownership of Hulk's and so they should. Hulk's may be Snickers and my dream but it is very much ALL of ours club. Their membership fees and attendance keeps this club running, Snickers and I merely own and manage it. We are the coaches here but we wouldn't have our jobs and this club if members didn't connect with it or us.
Hulk's is awesome and I don't think I'm biased in saying this but we want it to be mind-boggling awesome and the way to make it so is to launch Phase 2. Phase 2 of Hulk's consists of expanding upon what we already have here, opening it up for travelling team training, the ability for members to eat, sleep and train at the club, more equipment and an expansion on what we offer here not only in terms of what skills and sports but also with our coaching crew, hours of operation and so much more.
I am as excited about Phase 2 as I am completely nervous and anxious. Restless nights have started.
