As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

You Are Who You Surround Yourself With... Friday, March 18

Like minded, positive people.  This is what I strive to surround myself with.

I don't want to be with negative people and I don't want to be around anyone who is happy with settling and staying where they're at.  Everyday I'm trying to better myself, hell I have it tattooed on my arm, "Better than yesterday".  It's my club's motto in Korea because it's always been a person motto that I've had.  So hanging around folk that want to accept whatever life has to throw them or whatever comes they're way isn't what I'm interested in.  I want to be around the do-ers, the showers and not the talkers.
I think I've found my crew.

At System I associate myself with a fun-loving crew that's as super cool as they are super hardcore with their training.  Among those I train alongside many of them are currently preparing for various fitness shows.  At my main boxing club, we train in a crew of three right now -- Coach Perez, SV and me -- but others have trained alongside us like today and our training is hard.  SV is currently training for a fight so he cranks up the heat in the club, forcing us all to sweat our brains out.  At my other boxing club out in the east end, I participate in a boxing class with the main coach there.  Coach Rico is always giving me tips and pointers to improve my game and I know many of those in the class with me are really there to learn and improve their game too.  There's an awesomely positive crew there and that's one of the main reasons why I take the class.  After training with Coach Perez in the early afternoon, I come home to eat and then crash.  I then wake up, eat again, and then head out on a 50 minute commute to participate in a two hour class that leaves me sweating like a pure beast and arms all jelly.

And then there are those I train at PBB.  Man, those early morning risers who come out to my Monday morning Openbox class especially impress me.  I'm convinced they start training with me before their body even wakes up and realizes what they're doing.  Monday morning training is tough; it takes a lot of self discipline and dedication to commit to that.  I also teach at Tuesday and Thursday morning class; they impress me too.  Whether it's to improve their boxing skills, drop some body fat, pack on their muscle, or just stay active, everyone who comes to a class is there to improve upon themselves and that's the beauty of my job as a coach.  I am always surrounded by others trying to better themselves in one way or another.
