As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Always an Expected Busy Day with an Unexpected Issues... Monday, August 11

I've never been one to shy away from a Monday or label it the worst day of the week but this week's Monday definitely started off rough and it ended super late.

A nation wide manhunt officially got launched today for one of Snickers' former friends who did a bunch of us wrong, so Snickers headed off to the Daejon police station to initiate that.  This meant I ended up having to do the massive Monday clean by myself -- took me 2 hours and 20 minutes.

I totally was anticipating the early arrival of a member I can't say I am not too fond of but am happy to note I have only run into one other member in my time running Hulk's that fits the same bill.  Me being not too fond of them has to do with manners.  There is a big difference between showing me Korean manners and showing me just no manner and I think sometimes Koreans confuse or try to pass off showing no manners as being Western manners.  Like when they don't greet me by my title or bow like they would and like they do to Snickers.  I am not Korean so some don't show me Korean manners but they don't show me Western manners either and that's the big difference.  And this more so has to do with those I meet outside of Hulk's and not really with our Hulkies because they do show me much respect and I do try to make a relaxed atmosphere among our members.

I am simply "Amy" to most but Snickers is "leader" or "older brother", depending on who and where he is being approached.  I am older than all Snickers' friends and most of our members too for that matter, so if I were a Korean woman I would be definitely approached differently.  Sometimes I correct our members, mainly the younger ones, and tell them my name is "Coach Amy", but I find they're very willing to correct themselves and adopt the name.  I'd be approached differently though if this were Canada.  Back when I taught English, it used to drive me bonkers that the Korean teachers and staff used to allow the students to call me by my first name.  I would never call one of my teachers by their first name, hell I didn't even know most of their first names.  Anyways, I'm a bit over Koreans excusing their lack of manners as being "how Westerners do things" because I am a Westerner and I know it's not true.  We may be from the opposite side of the globe but it doesn't mean the side I came from doesn't have manners.  Plus, I've been living in Korea for 10 years now, you really can't pass things like this off so easily with me.

So anyways, back to what I had started to write before my ramble.  This one member is very new to Hulk's but is already busting my balls and testing my patience.  The other day she asked to borrow my clothes and then asked to borrow some shoes.  I leant her some shoes but refused with the clothes and told her jokingly that perhaps she could train naked if she can't prepare the simple necessities all our other members do.
Today however she didn't show up super early like expected and like last week.  Instead, at 1:40pm, 20 minutes before opening as I ran around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to get my cleaning done, another member arrived.  He sat on the door step and waited till 2pm.  Seeing him out there totally made me give out a long loud "awwww".  Just last Thursday he joined but already I really like this kid.  He's a young university boy who has a very boyish body and sports super adorable mannerisms like he's 12.  I can't quite pin point what it is about him but perhaps the fact that he calls me Coach Amy and is overly smiley to me plays a part here.
