As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Fierceness on the Streets of Cheonan... Friday, March 15

These ladies are kicking my butt, seriously. In the past few days, I’ve done two runs with them, did my own long run, and have clocked in 54km! Tonight I headed out with Cheetoh Girl and Perma Smile [that’ll be her temp nickname until I figure out one I like] for a run around Dankook lake.

The other day Cheetoh Girl messaged me, telling me that she wanted to do the half marathon with me on April 28th.  I was impressed but then when I asked her if she had ever done a race before I was completely shocked to hear that no, she hadn’t.

“Your first race ever is going to be a half marathon?!  You know that’s 21kms, right?” I asked.

Not only had she never done a race but she also never gone jogging.

With her Mouse Doctor (her boyfriend) doing the half marathon with me I’m pretty sure that’s why she jumped in on the action and agreed to it.  Cheetoh Girl is a tough cookie like that, always wanting to push her limits, hence why she’s one of my closest Korean female friends, but a half marathon with no prior experience what so ever with running?!  That’s beyond tough, that’s brutally tough!  I told her I’d give her a few days to think it over though.

Tonight the three of us fierce females hit the streets and did a solid 11km run.  Cheetoh Girl struggled a bit but mad props to her for coming out and really giving it her best shot.  The “Power of Partners”, as I told them, definitely made a huge difference and the proof was in Cheetoh Girl agreeing to go another lap.  Time and distance just fly by when you’re with a running partner, which makes me definitely question why more don’t join us because trust me, if a running partner can’t convince them to come out than I seriously don’t know what will.  There is certainly something to be said about the contagious energy and encouraging push of running with a partner.  I’m sold on it!!!

We ended our run with us heading back to my house.  No more breaking toilet scenes but we did have one of my protein-packed smoothies and sit around chatting.  Perma Smile’s boyfriend was singing downstairs at Banana Bar so she convinced us to check him out, despite non of us having yet showered – nasty, I knew I smelt!!!

Cheetoh Girl’s interaction with foreigners and English is pretty much just me but she was curious to see what it was all about.  We ended up running into some guys I knew, one of which remembered meeting me five years ago at Coffee Bean – how cool is that?!  Anyways, Cheetoh Girl was blown away by all the foreigners and pretty much stuck by my side because of her lack of English.

Ended up running into the husband of another running partner of mine from Flipside and I made quite the deal with him, or so I think.  He’s got two children but both he and his wife want to participate in A Day At the Races with Flipside Fitness.  The deal I made with him is that if he got his wife to do the half marathon with me and he did the 10km, I’d get Snickers to look after their two children at the races on race day.  Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

After Cheetoh Girl and I left Banana Bar, leaving Perma Smile there with friends and her man, we headed back to my place.  Snickers and Mouse Doctor joined us and I teased Mouse Doctor about all the drop-dead, sexy beast foreign men who had hugged and talked to Cheetoh Girl.  Ok, so only two of them hugged her but, considering Korean friends don’t hug, it had made for a highlight of her night… hahaha…. Cute.
