As today marked the official finish of our first month in official business, we sat down to ponder some things that need to be adapted, adopted and flat out kicked out.
Scheduled weekly business hours -- 56hrs
Monday to Friday, 2pm to 12am
Sunday, 2pm to 8pm
Average overtime hours put in a week -- 15hrs
1-2hrs before work doing errands (groceries, sponsor meetings, meeting suppliers, renovating, etc.)
1hr after work is spent either cleaning, PT meetings or training late members
TOTAL HOURS IN MY AVERAGE WORK WEEK -- 71hrs
[This doesn't include Saturdays which are technically our days off but we come in to do work and workout].
ADAPTED
1. Free Train Fridays
We no longer do any coaching on Fridays, with the exception of our crossfit circuit training class. After a full week -- Sunday to Thursday -- of padwork and coaching, we definitely need to give our bodies a rest. Sure our boxers may be the ones doing the punching during padwork but it's us they're punching, a fact that so many people fail to realize. Plus we also do our own training too so, trust me, almost every day Snickers and I wake up feeling like we've been hit by a truck.
2. Two Days of a Week
Technically we're only not open for one day a week -- Saturday -- but the beauty of our Free Train Fridays means that we really only need one coach at the club. I really like managing the club by myself so I've been giving Snickers this extra day off to meet up with his buddies and go fishing.
3. Designation of Towels
We scored a discount on blue towels when our supplier messed up on our order but blue isn't our club's colour. We now have blue and green towels. Green are for members, blue are for cleaning (with the exception of when we run out of towels... geez, too many members training, what a problem).
4. Mandatory Evaluation for Advanced Boxercise class Participation
Due to the fact that the Advanced Boxercise class does partner padwork, members who want to participate in this class must be evaluated by me first and meet the required criteria. Doing padwork with either Snickers or I is one thing but having boxercise members do it with each other can be quite dangerous if they don't know what they're doing -- dangerous for both the member punching and the member holding the pads. Also, it can be quite frustrating to so to help eliminate any potential injuries and to make sure members are relatively at par with each others level, this new rule has been put into place. Moreover, my Advanced Boxercise class now has stepped up a notch in the intensity of their training and has added match-boxing to their list of weekly training activities.
ADOPTED
1. Flat Rate Monthly juice bar Post Training Plan
A couple of my members have asked for a discounted rate if they prepay for a month's worth of protein shakes to be made every day after they train. I agreed to this proposal and am now looking into offering it to all my members -- making a discounted plan offer.
2. Healthy Treats at our Juice Bar
With so many of our members revealing it to me that they don't eat after training, I definitely feel more obligated to give them alternative options to starving themselves and to our regular protein smoothies. Our protein smoothies have been a huge hit but sometimes members want a simple snack they can pick up and run out the door with. I've been making my Epop Bars and they sell like hot cakes!!! The other day I made Protein Balls and I've been experimenting with other things too. I now stock the fridge with Greek yogurt and extra bananas for members to buy and I'm hoping to make my own yogurt soon. I've made homemade peanut butter for our smoothies but some who buy my Greek yogurt like to put a spoonful of it in their yogurt. I'm also thinking of making small baggies of trailmix and other healthy eats.
3. Staff uniform
All staff are to either wear our Hulk tank top or Adidas clothing. This was already something Snickers and I had agreed upon for both he and I but now that we've got a part time and soon-to-be assistant, we decided to make it a rule across the board. We had to do something to get our part timer to stop wearing, dare I say it, his Everlast tank top... oh Everlast. Great guy but not-so great name across his chest.
4. Summer Hours for Boxercise
With many of our non Korean members starting summer holidays or doing summer hours at their schools, we decided to knock down the number of classes. We chose to do this also to keep it group-oriented and because with me being only able to direct the class during the class hour time, poor Snickers is continually bombarded and overwhelmed with having to train all our other members by himself. From a business perspective, it's not appropriate for him to take on most of the weight of training members and me only train a couple during the selected hour. From a personal perspective, it's not fair and I feel guilty overseeing this.
5. VIP Member Tabs
Stopping everything to get out their cash or me to collect money for things like juices or smoothies can get rather annoying when it's during our busy times so I've started to make tabs for specific members. It's not an option that's been announced nor will it be an option offered to all members but members who I know outside of the club and whom I am close will be allowed to use this additional service. I've got five members with VIP Member Tabs.
KICKED OUT
1. Kato
It was kind of a bust trying to get him to work with us so he's been demoted from crew member to being a regular paid member. His father -- WOW Motors President -- initially wanted us to give him some responsibilities by telling him when to come in and help out but he hasn't really been helping out, just working out. Rather disappointing considering we still need help cleaning but it's ok, he's a kid so I suppose we'll have to let him be a kid.
2. Cleaning the floor Every Day
It takes the two of us -- Snickers and I -- over two hours to vacuum and mop all the floors in the club so we now do spot cleaning -- different floors get cleaned on different days. The juice bar area, front entrance, office, bathroom, and lounge tiled floors still get cleaned everyday though especially considering the nightly "mass suicide" of flies that happens in the lounge, oh gosh!
3. 'No Parking' Stickers
It's taken us quite a few months of daily frustrations, numerous phone calls and public arguments but we finally have a good control over the parking situation. We have a large side parking lot and two parking spots at the front doors but, up until recently, we continually had people ignoring our no parking signs (and stairs too for that matter). For a while there we had contemplated investing in those large no parking stickers that the city plasters on the front of car windows when they illegally park but, as it turns out, apparently getting me, a white foreign female who doesn't back down to anyone, to confront these parking pest has proved to be quite effective. Even at the sight of me arriving, a local shop owner who parks in our front spot before our opening hours moves her car! I haven't been nasty with such parking pests but must admit I've been rather sarcastic and sometimes rather creative, like texting them that their car has been hit. Koreans don't always respond when you text them to move their car but text them that their car has been hit and woozers, they'll come running from out of no where!!! I usually ask such parkers "Either your Korean reading is bad or your manners are bad because our no parking sign is in Korean, so which is it?" I'm always amused by their response but the best was when one person answered "C". There is no c answer, only a or b... hahahaha.
