As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

An Eggtastic Sponsorship... Saturday, January 4

It was our day off -- first day off for 2014 -- and it was a busy one.  Days off are never really days off, they're more or less catch-up days filled with random errands for both our home and Hulk's.  Today was no different.  It was filled with lots of chores to do at home, like washing the floors and catching up on laundry.  I also had a meeting, grocery shopping and then went back to Hulk's around midnight for training.

I am officially sponsored by a local free-range chicken farmer and, laugh as you may, I think it's pretty cool because I eat my weight in eggs.  Every week Snickers buys one case of 60 eggs for me at home and then every other week another case of 60 eggs for Hulk's.  I go through at least 60 eggs a week just by myself, Pyen Chi gets her daily 2 eggs with her morning meal and then the remaining eggs are usually sold at Hulk's via our egg ding-dings (egg snack).  As it works out, I go through about 90 eggs in a week.

90 eggs = 1.5 packs a week

1.5 packs a week x 4 weeks a month
= 6 packs a month

6 packs a month x 12 months a year
= 72 packs a year

72 packs a year x $9 a pack
=  $648

So, according to my purely-out-of-curiosity calculations, I spend about $650 a year to feed my egg-eating lifestyle.  And don't even get me started on my chicken or spinach, woozers.  Yes, this was a totally silly calculation to figure out and yes, I'm sure none of you will sleep any better having now lost the minutes it took to read it but so be it.

Being sponsored by a local egg farmer sounds pretty funny, I admit it, but a lot of the things, like this particular egg farmer, offer me sponsorships for things I already would be buying so it's so very helpful.  Adidas used to give me free training gear, ranging from high end gloves and newly released boxing boots to handwraps, and everyone knows a boxer goes through their fair share of gear so it was a wicked sponsorship.  The Cheonan Trump no longer gives me a weekly allowance and free dental work but his competition, a quite smaller dentist office, does.  Being sponsored by a car dealership who also owns a 24hr restaurant means my transportation is looked after as are many of my meals out when I eat at his restaurant.  I'm also sponsored by another restaurant so I eat there for free and have hosted many social events there.

The other day one of my friends asked me what do the companies who sponsor me get in return.  For many of them it includes me putting their company name/logo on my fight uniform, while for others it includes helping promote their business by recommending them to friends, only using their services or helping them out.  Sometimes I do a bit of computer work for them, editing their menus or doing English write ups on their company websites.  I get free tattooing done by Gamble Tattoo because I help them with the legal paper work and plane tickets needed to fly their artists in.  For the most part though, I must admit, a lot of these companies have sponsored me or Hulk's because they believe in me, believe in us and what we're doing, and I think perhaps they see a bit of themselves in us as young entrepreneurs.  I may never know why WOW President has sponsored us to the full extent he has but I am very appreciative of it.  I consider myself blessed to be so generously backed up by him and the other people and companies that support what we are doing so I'll take whatever they want to give, even if it's a pack of eggs that telling my friends about makes them giggle.  I think it's a pretty appropriate sponsorship for a gal like me.
