We're reached a decision -- Hulk's will no longer be open on Sundays.
This decision has been long dragged out and talked about amongst members and sponsors. Originally we decided to open on Sundays because it was a kind of bait, luring people to come train at our club as suppose to others because we'd be the only one open on any weekend day. Moreover, prior to Hulk's, my Flipside Fitness Sunday boxercisie classes always fit the schedule of most foreigners because regardless of if they went out of town or not on the weekends, they'd have to come back on Sunday to get ready for the work week. Sunday training was basically decided upon due to our foreign members and trying to accommodate to their training trends.. The trend of our Korean members has always been to come in almost every single day of the work week and then take the weekends off. But, based on our attendance and membership, our focus has shifted. Our focus has really changed; it is quite opposite of what we started with, consequently things are really changing. Change is good and, in this case, change is really, really good. One change has been the decision to close for the entire weekend. That's not to say we won't be in on the weekends to train, surely not. We've been nursing one of our amateur boxers who has decided to hold off university because of wanting to explore where he can go with his boxing. He has a fight next month, April, so we've been doing a lot of overtime with him on the weekends, as well as overtime with two other boxers, one of which is already pro.
Moreover, with us working on Sundays and KBC's fights apparently trending on Sundays, we have missed out on attending numerous tournaments and all the contacts and publicity that comes with attending them. We are a boxing club that can't attend tournaments?! Ya, not any more!!!
In addition to being able to participate with the rest of the boxing community and attend tournaments, having the weekend off from in-house club work means we will be able to focus our attention on other club-connected work, more specifically various projects we just didn't have the time to do before. Such projects include the following:
- a pick-up sports day volunteer program
- actively participating in one of Cheonan's running club
- "Hulk Family Day" with sponsor
- private one-to-one and group personal training sessions (on weekends)
The numbers coming out on Sundays to train just aren't convincing us to continually open on Sundays so we broke the news to those who came to train tonight and had one last discussion about it. Those who tend to come out on Sundays include a regular group of guys, almost all of which have bought six month memberships and whom I see almost every single day we are open. They are very loyal to us and very much dedicated to their training here so yes, they definitely had a say in this decision. Everyone agreed, Sundays at Hulk's will be no longer but that's not to say there won't be things for us to do or our Hulkies to get involved with. Currently our Sundays consist of training a handful of members, hosting the occasional sparring match and then heading out for a dinner/business meeting with WOW. I predict this to shift from Sunday to Saturday, with us getting a group of the guys together for private group training at a time of their picking and then heading out for our weekly business meeting after ward. We have a volunteer program that we're eager to launch too and this will also take place on Saturdays. We have a healthy list of volunteers ready and willing to start, we just have to officially make an agreement with the organization it'd involve and then launch it.
Dropping Sunday's in-club work load means taking on perhaps an even bigger work load outside of the club because of all the projects we want to start and get involved with. I'm excited about it though and I'm excited about not only the further development and ties it'll make between Hulk's and the community but also Hulk's and the rest of the Korean boxing community. I think in getting more involved with the community, it'll help to encourage our brother boxing clubs here in our own city of Cheonan to follow our lead.
