As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

My Day off of Productivity... Wednesday, April 9

I really wasn't very productive today....

I totally crashed after my morning coffee date and woke up 3hrs later.
I didn't get in my anticipated long run.
I didn't even go boxing.
I failed to find my friend's fiance's hair shop.
I showed up at Hulk's just long enough to sign up a new member.
I didn't finish preparing my meals for the week.

But, I did do the unexpected following...

I scored two points on my day off for this week's round of the Hulk's point game.
I got my hair cut at my neighbour's shop.
Took a city bus tour all around the city.
Meet all 5 four-legged friends of my good friend Cat -- super cute!!!
Visited a new neighbouring fight club.

Later in the evening, after I had totally been already super unproductive, my friend Cat and I decided to do a little bit of detective work, for business sake.  Just down the street from me there's a fight club that has recently popped up.  It advertises Ju-Jitsu, boxing, Crossfit, and diet, so I was curious as to just how in depth they taught each and what their coach's background was to be able to offer such an assortment.  My curiosity got the best of me today so I messaged Cat and off we went together to check it out.

When we entered the club, we were greeted by several young guys -- they looked about university age.  It was just them and us; the club hasn't actually opened yet for business so they were just there training alone.   There was no boxing ring and the only sandbags I noticed were two sitting in the corner of the ring, I wasn't impressed.  A fight club that advertises boxing but has no ring?!  Say what?

Anyways, we chatted for a bit.  I asked them about expected things -- their pricing, hours of operation, and so forth -- and then I asked their coach if he had any weight to his name in regards to boxing.  He's not a champion boxer and I get the impression he's only done amateur boxing.  Perhaps this is good enough for the average person looking to just lose weight but there are big differences between amateur and professional boxing.

I'm not interesting in dissecting this club nor was that my intention.  I just simply wanted to check it out and possibly make a connection with them because there are 9 boxing clubs here in Cheonan and 6 of us are very close.  I was curious as to whether or not this boxing club could be in our close circle of clubs.  I doubt it though.  Snickers and 5 fellow Cheonan boxing coaches would never label this place as a real boxing club; they just don't meet the expected criteria.  Regardless, it was very interesting to meet them and see their place.  I wish them well and expect them to do well because they were very energetic but the key for them is to remain passionate about what they're doing, that's so important.  That'd be my main advice to them, to do it if they love it because only if you love it will you be able to be constantly challenged and tested on a daily bases and come out on top.

Honestly, I felt a bit bad for letting my curiosity bring me there because no sooner did I start asking questions but then one interrupted and asked me if I was going to join.  Will I join?!  My inital answer is an obvious no but the more and more I thought about it, the more and more I considered it.  For the past 6+ years I trained with only Junior Mint and then when I made the switch to being trained by Snickers, it was incredibly hard.  I had become so comfortable with Junior Mint -- his style of padwork, his expectations and whatnot.  I think I really disadvantaged myself doing that and now I know this.  I've learnt that training outside of your comfort zone is where the changes really happen and the same is true with my boxing skills.  I had become so accustomed with what Junior Mint expected of me so I really missed out on picking up tips and pointers from other coaches.  Consequently, it made it incredible difficult for me to go from training with solely him to training with Snickers.  I feel like a beginner all over again.

Snickers suggested I go back, go back and introduce myself as the owner and coach of Hulk's.  I had merely introduced myself as a professional boxer looking for a sparring partner.  Perhaps I may go back and reintroduce myself, tell them that I do in fact have a club I'm training out of, a club that I own, but that I'm looking to pick up any extra pointers they want to throw my way.  It'd be interesting to join.  It'd be a nice change from my expected routine of late night training at Hulk's and it could help them join our circle of fellow boxing clubs here in Cheonan.  I suggested this to Snickers and he doesn't think it's a good idea because their coach doesn't have much experience in boxing so he questions if his coaching will help me or hinder me.  Instead, Snickers suggested that if I was interested in training once a week at another club, that I'd train at one of the five boxing clubs we're close with.  Out of the five, I'd definitely pick Beat Boxing.  There are two Beat Boxing Clubs, they're brothers, but I'm close with the coach of the Ssangyong-Dong club.  His club is quite successful and he's mentioned to me that he does have potential female sparring partners for me at his club.  I know stepping into his club to train would mean he'd hype me up and that'd throw a lot of added pressure on me but I think the added pressure would surely add to my game -- it'd help me get better control of the mental aspect of the game.  I haven't made a decision but it's something I'm definitely now considering.
