As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Happy 1st Birthday Hulk... Monday, June 2

This time last year we were hosting our grand opening party for Hulk's -- an over expensive catered party that I thought was rather superficial in it's efforts to be so Korean in style, I mean who gets a catered party for a boxing club?!  Exactly, well we did.  Koreans react to catered events and by react I mean they give money.  So while we made back the money spent on the caters plus some I though it was a little over the top and insisted Snickers let me plan something on a smaller scale for Hulk's first birthday.

Today's first birthday consisted of the following:
Decorations
two bundles of balloons
front entrance birthday banner
a computer-made large birthday banner that had pictures of members on the bottom part of each letter/page
individual hulk smash hand cutouts I made for the cupcakes

Pre-Party
Hulk Smash game for members training during the day
members coming in to train got to enter in one last ballot for tonight's Hulk Smash Prize draw

Party Time
a quick speech from Snickers on behalf of him and I and on behalf of our sponsors too
rock-paper-scissors among the mini Hulkies to see who'd pick out the winning ballot for the Hulk Smash
Hulk Smash Prize draw and pictures with the winner
Food and socialising time

Food and drinks
70 Hulk birthday cupcakes, made by my inspiring baker friend
One tin of cookies
Veggies and dip -- broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, red peppers, yellow peppers, tomatoes
Fruit -- cherries, oranges and watermelon.
About 20 different random tea/coffee/juice powder packs
Juice -- orange, grape and lemonade
Tea -- spicy pumpkin chi tea and strawberry tea

It wasn't a party with a set schedule or much complications beyond figuring out who'd get to pick the winning ballot for the Hulk Smash prize.  I'm sure I could have and should have given a speech, at least one in English to match Snickers' speech, but I wanted to keep it a simple and relaxing party.  I just wanted something short and sweet to acknowledge the day and to give it due recognition.  More importantly though, I wanted to do something nice for our Hulkies, a kind of social event, so that we could share the special day together.  It's not just "our" day, as in a special day for Snickers and I, so I really wanted it to be something our Hulkies would look forward to and plan to attend.  This is OUR club.  I may sign the bills and hand over the money but it's the membership fees paid that cover the bills and keeps this place running.  I'd like to think that Snickers' and my hard work and countless hours slaving away at the club keeps the lights on but really it is a collection of many and for that reason I thought we should celebrate the day together but in a more homey feel kind of way.
