As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

If it Doesn't Challenge You it Won't Change You... Saturday, July 19

They asked so I made it happen -- I prepared, hosted and participated in a crossfit class today at Hulk's.  It was a class unlike any other we've had and I knew it would be because I had planned it to be as such.

I called it the Crossfit Challenger Class.

Every day throughout the week I host crossfit circuit classes at Hulk's.  I sit down before the club opens and map out an appropriate circuit that's as challenging as it is interesting and do-able for all levels.  It's always a 16 minute circuit and, according to what day of the week it is, it focuses on a specific muscle group.  But I wanted to do something different for today's weekend class.

With many of our members being new to boxing, weight training and crossfit, many of them don't favor our Free Train Friday because it what they do for training (exercises, reps, sets, intensity, etc) is totally up to them.  Members like us coaching them, telling them what exercises to do and pushing them through their training, that's totally understandable and I really do enjoy guiding them, but it means however that we don't get many members using our weekend Free Train time.  Those who don't come use our Free Train days mean we see them only Monday to Thursday; they have a three day off period.  You really shouldn't go more than 2 days without any kind of exercise plus maintaining a healthy lifestyle is all about forming healthy habits, skipping out on training for 3 days isn't so healthy.  So the other day I decided to host a weekend crossfit circuit class, in hopes that this would eliminate the 3 day off many experience.

We hosted Free Train from 7-9pm tonight with our new weekend Crossfit Challenger class being scheduled for 8pm.  I anticipated members possibly showing up for just the crossfit class so I made it focus on both weight training and cardio and I added an extra component to it to lengthen it -- made it a full body circuit that was worth them coming out for.  Due to who was participating (and their ongoing desire to push me to the limits with my own training) we bumped the circuit up to intermediate level, aka torrential downpour, possible flood level.  To say we sweated through it would be the under statement of the year -- we experienced a bodily downpour to which we risked slipping in when the circuit was over.  It was awesome and I was so very impressed with just how hard they all pushed themselves through my class.  I tell you, it wasn't easy and them adding four extra reps to each set meant the class intensity went from hard to hardcore hard!

After training, we then all showered.  Many sat on the front club sofas exhausted, talking about how hungry they were but how too tired they were to get up and leave.  "If you get up, I'll provide the food" I told them, and with that we took a group of Hulkies out for a hearty post-training meal at one of my favourite after training restaurants and then sat around outside chatting, sipping on yogurt.

Prior to Free Train starting tonight, a new member signed up, was measured and then put through warm-up while his father and sister watched.  He's a young soccer player and he's officially now our weekend personal training client.  We do do personal training at Hulk's but honestly have been discouraging members to sign up and pay extra for it because with just Snickers and I having to juggle the large crowds that come out for training, we just don't have an extra hour or even the extra energy to put towards training just one person.  From a business perspective, it's not worth the extra money when it means taking us away from training the many others at the club at that designated hour.  Moreover, we already are pretty hands-on with all our members' training.  The parents were pretty persistent with asking us to personal train their son but we don't want to take on any personal training clients at this time.  Moreover we don't work weekends but during the week this particular young soccer player isn't in Cheonan.  His parents stopped by last weekend to discus the idea of us personal training him on the weekends so I told them the price at which I would work the weekend for.  They then thanked me for my time and said they'd get back to me on it.  Today they got back to me via showing up at Hulk's with an envelop containing payment for the next couple of weekends so today he started training with us.

Today was our day off but it went as follows:
  • 11am -- woke up
  • 12pm -- cleaned the floors
  • 1pm -- watched a movie on TV
  • 3pm -- renovations and more club cleaning
  • 6pm -- personal training

  • 8pm -- Crossfit Challenger class
  • 9:30pm -- dinner and lounging with Hulkies
  • 11:20pm -- arrived back at Hulk's
