As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

The Ghost of Hulk's Club Visits Me... Sunday, July 20

It wasn't totally a lie I told when I said I'd be taking the day off training.  I even added an "entire" to that sentence when I said it.  "I'm taking the entire day off training", and well that's exactly what I did.  But come evening, when day was long gone, I did train.

My reasoning behind training was rather silly though because it was due to a ghost.

Yes, I wrote "a ghost".

I'm convinced our boxing club is haunted and I've written about this before.  You see, before our boxing club's building was even here, this was the location of a hospital.  And you know what happens at hospitals, people come in sick and some leave healthy but some don't exactly leave, if you know what I mean.  Now I'm a firm believer of energy, both the positive kind and the negative, and I definitely believe that places have their own energy.  Whether it's people bringing it to the place or others leaving it there, energy lingers.  Our building site in no different.

Many neighbouring shop owners and residents warned us initially when we first showed interest in this building.  One shop owner went as far as to approach Snickers' father, K-Gere (which at the time he didn't know it was Snickers' father) and tell him that he gave Snickers one month before his business goes under.  Many claim that this building is haunted and negative energy lingers while many others beg to differ and say that because we're a boxing club -- a business that is associated with fighting, blood and injuries -- that the negative energy may do us good because a boxing club brings it's own bad energy.  The bad energy of past mixed with the bad energy associated with a boxing club and viola, extra strength.  Say and believe what you'd like but all I know is that our business has been very successful and continues to break it's own records and those of neighbouring clubs.

Back around Christmas time when we had hired help living within our club, after his first day of sleeping at Hulk's he noted that he didn't sleep well.  We had left him overnight in a bedroom we had just renovated for him and left him with Pyen Chi, a 45kg dog that would surely prove to be awesome security for him.  Well, apparently the security she proved spooked him because what she ended up barking at was something our hired help couldn't see.  We had told him about the story of our place being once a hospital so perhaps that didn't really help the situation.  By night two he was text messaging me, telling me that he wanted to continue working for us but that he wanted to live at my apartment and not the club.  It was more or less him refusing to sleep at the club.

On more than one occasion strange and deranged situations like this have happened and I was one to experience them first hand, like when Pyen Chi refused to come into the office and then barked at our office closet door.

But nothing has ever happened like tonight...

It all went down when I was washing the club floor.  I was at the back end of the boxing area, busily mopping the floor, when all of a sudden all three pups came charging at me.  You can imagine my shock at the sight of them running from the very front club window to me at the back.  Then suddenly they all stopped, with about 3/4 of space left (right by the black sandbag for those who know our club).  They barked at bit and then I shooed them away.  Then, when I texted Snickers to ask what time he'd be coming back, I decided to do a bit of training.  I wanted to stay up to wait for him plus I was a bit on end with what had just happened.  So I jumped on the treadmill and started jogging.  That's when Balboa came by me.  He stood about 5 feet away from the treadmill and while looking straight at the wall at the back of the club he started barking his head off.  This went on and off again for the next 10 minutes while I jogged.  By then it was freaking me out so I decided to grab my cellphone and video tape it.  What I caught on video was Balboa standing on the edge of the boxing ring, looking in the direction of the back wall, barking.  And then, when I headed over to the side mirror, he turned and was looking at the back of the club.  Something was there, I'm convinced and nothing anyone can say will convince me differently.

Needless to say I was spooked.  I like scary movies but I like that they're on the big screen and not in my daily life.  And on that note, I continued to train hard up until Snickers arrived.  There was no way I was going to go to the back of the club to shower and attempt to sleep, not by myself at least.  Leave it to Snickers to tease me about it and then take to a bit of an extreme cruel joke by pretending as if someone or something was behind me.  I tried to play it cool and act like it didn't bother me but I know he heard me run like hell from the shower to the bedroom when I finished.  There was no way I was going to greet some ghost while I was buck naked.
