As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

Looking for a Very Important Person... Monday, November 24

I'm on the lookout for another "project person", a person whom I can give a Hulk's VIP membership to and whip into shape.  We've given out VIP memberships before at Hulk's which in the past simply meant we've allowed certain people in the past to train here absolutely free.  It was more or less a means of thanking and helping out certain people that had supported us from the start or showed great potential and dedication with allowing us to get them in tip top shape.  They were our hopeful transformations.  There really was no strings attached but it was hoped that such people would return the support via training hard at Hulk's and helping promote us via word-of-mouth and mass media, like tagging us in Facebook posts and pictures, and would help up the social morale of the club.  Of course what we had wished in our minds and what we got in reality weren't exactly the same thing, definitely not the same thing, but we also failed to set any real terms and expectations of our VIP members.  That was our mistake, we now realize that, it's a mistake we're not going to make again.

We have revised why it is we give out VIP memberships and what it means to be a VIP member, to clear things up both for ourselves and those receiving such memberships. The whole point really of it all is to put into practice and make an example of what Hulk's Boxing stands for -- training hard, playing hard and eating clean.  Our VIP membership is a personalized training membership where we map out their training program and clean eating.  They would be a walking, talking example of how we can help people here at Hulk's -- they'd be a representative of our club.

It used to be an unlimited membership, meaning they could continue training at Hulk's basically as long as they're living here in Cheonan, South Korea, but we found this to be too much and it left us with basically no say if we felt the member no longer deserving of it for whatever reason.  Now there is a 3 month time frame on the first membership and then renewals last 2 months.  Additionally, now there are terms and expectations that come with accepting such membership.

TERMS AND EXPECTATIONS OF A VIP MEMBER:

  • They must commit to training at Hulk's for at least 3 days a week during their membership period with exceptions given during holidays and other reasonable circumstances.
  • They are to only train at Hulk's Boxing during the duration of their VIP membership with the exception of home workouts when they can't come in to train at the club.
  • They must actively participate in club social activities in and outside of our club and be interactive with other members during training.
    • They do not have to come to every out-of-club activity but attendance at such events is taken into consideration when it comes to membership renewal.
  • Participate must actively train with both coaches at Hulk's.
  • Participate must train in both boxing and crossfit but can more actively training in one.
  • Participate is to actively adhere to the training program and clean eating program that has been specifically designed for them, making sure to keep written records where required/asked.
  • After their initial 3 months, their membership will be up for review.
    • If they do not pass the review, their free VIP membership will be discontinued and they will be offered the Hulk's Member Special rate for any additional months they chose to buy.
    • If they pass the review, they will be offered a 2 month membership extension.
    • Additional extensions will be offered every 2 month review they pass.

We have given out a total of 9 VIP memberships the past year but just recently we put into effect the terms and expectations of the VIP membership.  Consequently, we debated whether or not to even review the current VIP memberships or cancel them all and just start fresh.  We decided to renew each of them.  The longest of the VIP memberships had lasted 8 months and the shortest was one I just handed out about two weeks ago.  Of the 9 VIP memberships offered, 5 were denied renewal, 1 is pending, and only 3 passed.  Of the 3 who passed, they have been very successful and I am so proud of their progress.

I want another VIP member though.  One I can personally take on alone and push to success.
