My two absolute favourite moments of the day today were the following:
1. A Unexpected Christmas Gift from a Hulkie
It's been a rough week, one that has been more stressful than anyone beyond that of Snickers and I could ever possibly imagine. We haven't had a rough, super stressed week like this since... hmmm... maybe our opening when we arrived to the back end of the club flooded. But this week was worse. Yes, worse than standing in ankle deep bathroom water, with a broken tile every where and its water consuming the back training area.
I woke up today super pumped it was Friday because it meant the week was finally over but that thought made me a bit sad. I've never really wanted the work week to end; I love my job. But, like mentioned above, it had been a rough week.
Monday was brutal, Tuesday was rough, and it was looking like the rest of the week would be stress-filled too. Our massive glove order hadn't arrived yet from Pakistan, our supplier's business partner had died, the temperatures had plummeted thus causing members to stay home and our club's attendance to reach an ultimate low, the store hadn't processed our order of Christmas wish balls so we had to scramble to order elsewhere, and we had just spent the past two days waking up every two hours to turn off and on the water so that the water in the pipes wouldn't freeze. Enough was enough, I knew I had to do something to turn our week around and so I decided to throw a party at Hulk's. I called it "Sausage & Social" and then worked on stocking up on sausages and spreading word.
One of our amateur team members always seems to be one of the first to comment about things in the club, extra things we do, like our Advent calendar and Christmas lights. He says he likes "the character and culture" I bring to the club and I'm always very appreciative of his comments and compliments. When I told him I was going to host the Sausage & Social, he smiled and asked if it was an "adult party", meaning would members be drinking. I laughed, said yes, and added that if this week continues the way it's going I too may take up drinking and join in on the "adult fun".
Tonight this particular member showed up with a gift for me. He couldn't stay for our Sausage & Social but wanted to give me something. It was a box with two bottles of wine from Chile (my favourite) and a box of drinking glasses. "If you're going to drink, drink classy", nice. I was really touched by his gift, it seemed appropriately fitting for the week I had just had but what got me the most was the fact that he had brought another box of two wines. When he handed it to me, he told me to give it to the member who had had the most success with their monthly weigh-in. I was so touched because so many of our members really go out of their way to support not only us but each other and I just think that's so awesome. Whether it's members driving each other home in this nasty cold weather, members waiting for the last of Crossfit class members to finish their rep till they put weights away, or cheering on those who are sparring, we do have a really, really great crew here and it's pretty cool to know that most of them all met here under our roof.
2. My Mini Hulkie Makes Hulk History!!!
I had specifically added an extra gift to our Advent calendar this week for today because of our Sausage & Social but when one member asked me who was going to get them, I didn't know. We had roughly 20 people at our party so minus Snickers and I there were 18 of them looking back at me for my answer. "Let's have a competition", I blurted out, "plank time!!!" I pride myself on the fierceness of my female Hulkies so we volunteered to go first. There were four of us. I couldn't exactly win the prize, that wasn't fair nor cool, so after the first girl dropped out I decided to stand up and cheer on the rest. Next up was the guys turn. With six of them lined up on the floor and both Wow and Snickers being in the line up, I knew it would be quite the intense competition. And that it was!!! I'll be the first to admit that I thought it would get down to just Wow and Snickers but when Snickers dropped, the whole competition changed. The last two planking were that of Wow and one of my mini Hulkies. Everyone knows Wow is a force to reckon with but no one would have ever guessed that this young mini Hulkie would be in the final two. Being very underweight for his age and sporting my borrowed pants that are tight on me but loose on him, no one thought he would make it past the first minute but he was still going strong after six. We were impressed -- we were ALL so very impressed -- and all we could really do was scratch our head with the total unexpected sight of this underweight mini Hulkie going against Wow, who is pure wow in every sense of the word.
...then Wow dropped.
When Wow dropped we all screamed and jumped but my mini Hulkie kept going strong with holding his plank position. "You can stop now", we told him, "you won!" He smiled big, dropped to the floor, and then simply said "OK". I think at that point even Wow was lost for words. My little mini Hulkie who reads in on the InBody machine as needing to gain both muscle AND fat, gained so much respect, high fives and even hugs tonight by winning the plank off competition and it was awesome. I was so proud of him, perhaps more so because he beat Wow, and I just thought this moment was the coolest thing to have happened this week and by far the coolest way to end our work week.
