As the story has it, one day I headed to the opposite side of the globe – the Flipside. I arrived in Korea February 16th, 2005 and thought I’d do a year, then leave. I was wrong. I stayed, launched my first company, Flipside Fitness, and then opened Korea's largest boxing club, Hulk's Boxing (now called Hulk's Club).

After 11.5yrs in Korea, I then picked up one day and returned to Toronto, Canada. But then I left again.

Now I live in the Philippines where I am the CEO and head coach of Empowered Clubhouse, the Philippines' first and only boxing clubhouse exclusively just for women. I also am the founder of the Lil' Sistas Project, CEO and designer of Slay Gear and Baa Baa Black Sheep .Ph.

No Good in These Goodbyes... Thursday, January 22

It's been a weird and unexpected week of goodbyes with three members coming into Hulk's to pick up their stuff and tell us they may not be returning for training.  For one member, he is taking the time off to nurse an ignored injury that now he knows he shouldn't have ignored.  It was anticipated that he'd be the amateur boxer to watch because though he is super shy outside of the ring and holds back with sharing himself, he is super fierce when inside of it, when sparring, and he definitely doesn't hold back.  As for the second goodbye, this particular member is being moved to another city because of his current job.  But the third goodbye, it was a very sad one and I hope it isn't really a goodbye but instead a see-you-later kind of bye.

A little while ago one of our long term female Hulkies complained about not losing weight and her last monthly In-Body report had showed a significant change in her body that left both Snickers and I confused.  She ended up going to see her doctor about it and, as it turns out, she was pregnant.  She stayed with us one month longer, to do light training as a mommy-to-be and she refrained from telling other members that she was pregnant because it was a surprise and she wasn't married.  She was to be a first-time mom and was super nervous about it but she didn't want people to think differently of her nor treat her differently.  We haven't seen her at training for sometime now but assumed it was because her pregnancy was progressing and thus signs of it were becoming more apparent.  We ran into her the other day, when we were heading out the door to catch a movie.  She was all smiley she saw us but didn't look pregnant.  Turns out she had a miscarriage.  There was that awkward moment when she blurted it out, just threw it out into the air for our ears to catch.  I didn't know what to say, I mean what can you say to that, so we shook our heads and told her how sorry we were to hear such news.  She says she doesn't know if she'll return to Hulk's because she doesn't know how to explain to others she always trained why she left and she had in fact told a few of them that she was pregnant.  I don't know how long she was into the pregnancy when she had a miscarriage but regardless, a miscarriage is a miscarriage.  She lost the child she had decided she was going to change her entire life for.  How do you bounce back from that?!  I don't think you ever can.  I don't think you can ever go back to how things used to be either, you can only move on, so I think a part of her moving on is not returning to Hulk's.  It was sad to see her boyfriend come in to pick up her shoes because we didn't know what to say.  He smiled, we smiled back, but both him and us didn't really know what to say.  And it was so sad to see him leave Hulk's because you knew behind that smile was one hurting man, one hurting couple.

Rather than a miscarriage, it's far more likely that she had an abortion, especially given that she would have been a single mom.

Hi Mrs. Kim,
No, she had a miscarriage. She was quite open about it actually. At first she was hesitant to keep it but then she and her boyfriend decided they were going to have it and get married so that they could raise it as a family.
