There I was, standing there in this gorgeous event space packed with people, a giraffe luring over me and a polar bear to the left of me, when all of a sudden a girl comes rushing up to me and says "It's you!"
To tell you the truth, I'm bad with names and I've been meeting more people here in the Philippines that I can hardly keep track of. My business networking skills are constantly being flexed on a daily bases and friends and business mentors are always introducing me to new people and passing my name and number on to others. It's hard to remember all whom I've met. So when this particular young lady came up to me at tonight's party and greeted me as such I knew not what to do beyond giggle and offer her the typical Filipino way of saying hello, I kissed her on the cheek.
Turns out I've met her, well not really. Not in person at least.
Everyone is online, it's no surprise and it's no different than how it was in Korea or in Canada, but this past week I had actually friended her online, on Facebook to be exact. You know how Facebook does friend recommendations, well, she was recommended to me. She wasn't the only one either, of course, but she and five other recommendations suggested to me were added by me.
I use to add people on Facebook if it suggested we had something like 30+ friends in common because I knew for the most part they were probably someone in the boxing community, like a fellow boxer, coach or boxing fan. I've got a lot of fans on Facebook and I've got a fan page for them too but a lot of them try to add me personally to their list of "friends".
This posses some problems though:
1. Facebook only allows you to have 5,000 friends so there's a cap and I'm close to it.
2. Trying to see my actual friends' posts is next to impossible on my feed because of other "friends".
3. There's no push for them to join my fan page if they can get a more in depth look via my personal page.
4. Some of them end up creeping my page and randomly try to "friend" my real friends.
I've started to delete random so-called friends, people that are basically just fans, but I'd love to just pay someone to go onto my Facebook page and personally clean up my friends list. Now days, unless I actually know the person sending the friend request, the only people I add to my Facebook friends list is if they're female and living in the Philippines. If they're female and they live in Makati, my city, then I'll for sure add them.
Tonight that girl was one of the girls I had added on Facebook. The friends we have in common are some business mentors of mine who are also friends and people I look up to. It was so strange to be greeted as such but it was also super flattering. She had heard about me from one of our common friends who had boasted and bragged about me and then she introduced me to some of her friends. It was an unexpected introduction but it made for a funny story and a pretty cool night.
