...GSP returns after 4 years of not fighting to win the title in a very bloody battle!!!
...Freddy Roach was in GSP's corner!!!
...Hendricks loses!!!
...the reining champion Joanna loses to the underdog, Rose!!!
Man, what a card! The fights on the UFC 217 card were amazing and I can't remember the last time I've seen such a stacked card of action-packed, result-shocking fights. Seriously, it was incredible. I don't really consider myself a UFC fan, I came today because I wanted to see GSP's return fight after having been away for 4 years and I wanted to see Joanna vs Rose. GSP's fight was great but it was the girls' fight that really was awesome for me -- Joanna vs Rose. On the one hand, I wanted Joanna to win because I may be from Canada but I'm a proud Polack and she's Polish. But I know she talks a lot and she's kind of too in-your-face for me, especially when it came to the weigh-ins and when she posed with Rose for a picture. She stood there saying nasty things to Rose and it was a bit off-putting for me. What I later found out though was the fact that while she was standing there cursing Rose out, Rose stood there super calm and cool, reciting the Lord's Prayer. That's kind of freaking if you ask me. I wonder, was she saying the Lord's Prayer for her own piece of mind or was she directing it towards Joanna, as in praying for her?! Interesting.
I chose to cheer for Rose.
Joanna stepped in as the expected win having never lost a previous fight and owning a fight record of 14-0. Rose, on the other hand, stepped in with a 7-3 record. It wasn't clean, sure, but she definitely wasn't as experienced in the ring as Joanna was. Rose was clearly the underdog in this fight. What really got me about her though was the fact that she sleeps, eats and breaths her sport. She use to have long hair and then shaved her head because she wanted to really direct all her attention to her sport, her looks included. Her fiancee is also a former UFC fighter and leading up to this particular fight she basically closed herself off to any outside influences by training in a secluded club where she basically didn't interact with anyone outside of her coaching team.
She IS a fighter, to the core, and now she's the newest UFC Women's Strawweight Champion.
TKO in the first round.... wow!!!
